Finch had the misfortune to be born on December 30, so there will always be a Christmas tree in the background of his birthday party pictures.
It wasn’t really his fault that he was born on December 30. He was not in any hurry to be born, even though we were expecting him the second week of December. But we weren’t really thinking about what his future birthday pictures would look like.
Yep, birthday parties were pretty much the last thing on my mind on December 29, 2006.
Now Nick was probably busy thinking about getting that tax deduction before the deadline, and he was likely thinking about my getting some relief from my bloated condition. I’m sure he was looking forward to coming to the end of my pregnancy complaints, but I know he didn’t give one thought to the fact that our baby would have a lifetime of Christmas tree-themed birthdays.
So there, I’ve established that we were, at least at one point, thoughtless parents. On December 29, down went the castor oil and out came Finch, bright and early on December 30! I know it didn’t really happen that quickly, but that’s the way I prefer to remember it, thank you very much.
He wasn’t very happy about being born, I can tell you. He was mad at the world. Or maybe he was mad at us for ruining all his future birthday plans. Since then, he has mostly gotten over his anger. We bribe him with chocolate cake.
Happy birthday, baby boy! What would we do without you?

A really good-looking boy. And so sweet and fun to be around, even at ths age.

Better than good-looking! Remember those “flat ears”? Each one of your children is so precious. The “r” on my keyboard is acting up again so I’ll have to limit my comments to r-less words.

Yeah, I thought about mentioning his newborn flat ears. Maybe that’s what he was so mad about.

Hey my birthday is close to Christmas too – the 27th, it is not so bad. The nice thing now that I am grown up and live a thousand miles away from my parents is that I usually am either with them or will be soon on my birthday. As a kid, my parents were always careful to never give me a “Christmas/Bithday” gift! They kept it separate.
Happy Birthday Finch!! I never heard you drank castor oil to get him here
my midwife recommended evening primrose oil (not by drinking, but anyway…) with Annalise, I went into labor the next day, maybe it worked! Guess I don’t have to worry with that this time.
